Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church & School
6840 N. 107th Street, Milwaukee, WI 53224             Birthplace of the Wisconsin Synod

This building was our church building until 1977 when the new church was dedicated. It still stands on the property and serves as the home of the WELS Historical Institute.
We are constantly looking for items from Salem's past to include in the Salem archives, especially missing photographs from our 1947 Centennial booklet and confirmation photos prior to 1949. For more information, contact the Archivist.

Continuing in Grace (1868-1946)

Pastor Hoffmann served Salem from 1868-1895. The next pastor to serve Salem was Pastor C. F. Duecker. During his years of service, the congregation built one of its' parsonages. The parsonage built at 6679 N. 107th Street was built in 1896 at a total cost of $1,400. Pastor Duecker served Salem until 1900. When Teacher Hoffmann resigned in January of 1897, Mr. G. Brauer was called.

In 1900, the congregation extended a call to Pastor Walter Hoenecke. A year and a half later Teacher Brauer resigned, and Mr. John Prager was called to take his place.

In 1910, Pastor Hoenecke accepted a call to Bethel congregation in Milwaukee. Pastor Paul Kneiske was called. On the 18th of January 1920, the congregation was stunned with the sad news of the death of their teacher, Mr. Prager. In the summer of 1920, Mr. Charles Lemke succeeded Mr. Prager as teacher at Salem Lutheran School. In the same year, Pastor Kneiske accepted a call to be pastor in Lannon, Wisconsin.

At its annual meeting held in January of 1921, the congregation extended a call to Pastor Frank Gundlach who served at Salem until 1947. Under his leadership, Salem observed its diamond jubilee in 1922. The church was remodeled extensively, with the addition of the basement in 1946. Three teachers served at Salem during this period of time - Mr. Lemke, who served from 1920-1936; Mr. John Meyer, who served from 1936-1938; and Mr. F. W. Schultz, who served from 1938-1942. In 1942, the school in the basement of the Landmark Church was closed.
